"Memory" 30th March 2020

We have known Jackie since Gareth joined Long Eaton Round Table in 1985 and I inducted Jackie into Long Eaton Ladies Circle in the same year. I had met Jackie at Toddler Group at the Baptist Church Hall in Sawley when our children were very young. I remember that Jackie had a red BMW which she was very proud of. Over the years we have spent many times with Jackie and Gareth going to various events which involved dressing up. You can see Jackie here at the Pirates Party organised by Peter and Annie Holdsworth and Howard and Kay Parratt. I remember very clearly that we had to “walk the plank” and ended up in a bucket of water. There is also a picture at our home taken at Halloween where we were all appropriately dressed. In 1988 a Wine Club called “The Phellonists” was started up, members being Annie, Peter, Howard, Kay, Gareth, Jackie, Richard, Faith, Barry and myself. The “Phellonists” carried on for many years. We enjoyed many evenings tasting new foods and wine. We even stored wine in 1990 ready for the Millennium, we had a very exciting evening in 2000, all wines, and food, of course, went down well. We visited Amiens in Picardy France, where we all learnt how to cook and, of course, we had to drink the wine too! For many years, Faith, Jackie and I walked in the morning on a Monday, Wednesday and Friday to try and keep more fit, it did work. Wednesday’s did get dropped but the walking went on for a long time with Jane joining the group, and latterly Frank., Barry and Tim also joined the group when they could. Jackie was always a font of knowledge, if I needed to know how to do something, generally she knew what to do. I remember when Rita got a new car and the end of the number was PJU, this meant “Pick Jackie Up”! Jackie was always a great support for Gareth when he took his vintage car affectionately known as “Ruby” to country shows, including the Derbyshire County Show. She always dressed appropriately and had a really fantastic luncheon that they would share with anyone who was there at lunchtime. Jackie will be greatly missed by us all. Jan and Barry xx
